🌱 Responsibilities
As a Gardener, you will play a key role in maintaining and enhancing the beauty of our outdoor spaces. Your responsibilities will include:
🌾 Maintaining grounds by sweeping, hoeing, raking, mowing, edging, and removing litter/rubbish.
🌿 Performing soil cultivation, manuring, site preparation, and construction tasks.
✂️ Carrying out grass cutting, hedge trimming, pruning, turfing, and seed sowing.
🔧 Using powered hand tools and light machinery to complete tasks efficiently.
🛒 Loading, unloading, and moving equipment and materials such as mowers, barrows, plants, soil, and fertilisers.
🧹 Cleaning and maintaining gardening tools and equipment, including basic maintenance of lawnmowers.
🌳 Identifying and cultivating a wide range of plants, trees, and shrubs, and taking remedial action to control pests and diseases.
📚 Assisting in the training and mentoring of junior staff.
⚽ Maintaining games facilities, including marking fields, spiking, scarifying, and erecting/dismantling posts.
☠️ Applying chemical pest control methods, including calibrating sprayers and identifying pests, diseases, and weeds.
🚜 Operating tractor-mounted equipment as required.
🦺 Ensuring all work complies with Health and Safety regulations and council policies.
📜 Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you must meet the following criteria:
Essential Qualifications:
✔️ NVQ Level 2 in Amenity Horticulture or an equivalent relevant qualification.
✔️ PA1 and PA6 Pesticide Application Certificates.
Essential Experience:
🌱 At least one year of relevant work experience in gardening and horticultural tasks, such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, planting, and litter removal.
🤝 Experience dealing with members of the public in a face-to-face environment.
Special Skills and Attributes:
🤗 Strong team-working skills and the ability to collaborate effectively.
🛡️ Awareness of personal responsibility for Health and Safety.
🌸 Technical knowledge of horticulture and gardening, with the ability to coach junior staff.
💬 Excellent communication skills to interact with colleagues, management, and the public.
🌟 A commitment to providing outstanding customer care and maintaining a positive public image.
Desirable Criteria:
🌾 Two years of relevant work experience in gardening and horticulture.
🎓 A higher-level qualification, such as NVQ Level 3 in Amenity Horticulture or an equivalent relevant qualification.
🌄 Day-to-Day
Your typical day will include:
🕢 Start your day at 7:30 AM and finish at 3:30 PM (Monday to Thursday) and 3:00 PM on Fridays.
🚶♂️ Working outdoors in parks, playing fields, and landscaped areas.
🌳 Using your skills to maintain and enhance the beauty of public spaces.
